New Discoveries in Niagara ON

By: Barbara Barde/Robert Henderson

Thinking about a trip to the wine country of Canada?  Niagara is one of the gems of the Canadian landscape. The landscape comes with wineries all good and the wine makers are truly in the realm of artisan producers all striving for that perfect wine in very small productions.  They have raised the bar in terms of quality and diversity.

Last week I visited a few wineries and was very impressed with the passion and overall quality of the wines.  So, if you are in the region you may want to visit some.

Leaning Post Wines

It is owned by Ilya and Nadia Senchuk. Ilya was a winemaker at Daniel Lenko for 8 years, worked at Te Kairanga wines in New  Zealand and most recently at Foreign Affairs. The name represents the essence of their project. Just as grapes lean on posts and wires to grow, Leaning Post would not be possible without their leaning on their family and friends. Most of their wines are single vineyards. They find small unique parcels of land and put them in the bottle. I tasted a variety of their reds and whites.

Westcott Vineyards

After retiring from successful careers in information technology, Grant Westcott and Carolyn Hurst, purchased 28 acres from the Staff family in 2005 which are next to Le Clos Jordanne’s Talon Ridge vineyard. They specialize in organically grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They have a very focused approach to wine making and wine grape growing. They also have a lovely, elegant line of wines which are inspired by women from the 1920’s including: Lillias, Delphine, Violette and Temperance. And stories…lots of stories.

Di Profio Wines Tasting and Lunch

It originally  was well known for their Gamay Noir – a light bodied red with a beautiful peppery finish.  However, with the inception of The Kitchen Zinc and Zinctastic, these  outsell all their other wines 2 – 1.  Light, refreshing, off dry and fun!  72% Sauvignon Blanc with the remaining 28% comprised of Viognier, Muscat, Videl and Gewurtraminer.  The Zinctastic is a 50/50 blend of Cab Sauv. and Merlot. Wonderfully rounded tannins drinking optimally now but still can enjoy the cellar for another 5 years. The tasting was a flight of three wines and then have a three course lunch with paired wines.

Pearl Morisette Estate Winery

It is a unique partnership between developer Mel Pearl and Burgundy trained François Morisette. They have planted Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. They chose these varietals because of their ability to produce expressive wines in the challenging, climate driven vintages of Ontario. The tasting was of wines they deem to be truly representative of their portfolio.

Foreign Affairs Winery

Len Crispino, a former Ontario trade diplomat in Italy, and his wife, Maria, discovered the wonders of Amarone styled wines and they wanted to bring this craftsmanship to Canada. They decided to purchase 40 access of prime land. They use the appassimento drying method which is the slow process of drying the grapes in proper drying racks under optimum conditions. They dry their grape stock until the varietals are perfect for winemaking. The tasting included 4 partial appassimento wines which means they have been dried for minimum of two months and their famous Cabernet Franc which has been dried for between 3-6 months.
