IWFS Toronto is very proud and honoured to announce that Marcel Bregstein, our Cellar Master, is also the champagne sabering champion of the English-speaking world, having sabered 42 champagne bottles in one minute!
Marcel agreed to attempt to set a new official Guinness Book of World Records benchmark for champagne sabering as part of a fundraising event for the construction of the Toronto Commandery Hospice. The event took place at the Toronto Polo Club under Guinness rules, with IWFS member Erin Kuzz, (whose firm also donated the champagne glasses for the event) and Toronto Branch President Chris Tierney serving as Expert Witnesses.
A sincere and heart felt thank-you goes to The Case for Wine and Jean-Rémy Rapeneau, who donated the Rapeneau family’s very fine Brut Victoire champagne (rated 90 in Wine Spectator) in the attempt to snare the world title. The champagne was not wasted, being eagerly consumed by the assembled guests and dignitaries, and the entire feat was repeated the following morning on Canada AM for the benefit of viewers across Canada.
When the event was organized, the number to beat was 40 bottles in one minute. While he won that record at 42 bottles, it would appear there is fierce competition from Switzerland, so the record now officially stands at 47 bottles achieved by Mirko Rainer (South Tyrol) in Mendrisio, Switzerland, on 6 September 2014.
The sabre used by Mirko Rainer was a custom champagne sabre with a 15-inch (38-centimetre) blade, made by Consigli in Italy.
Marcel also used a special sabre, donated for the event and subsequently auctioned off for the cause. He had to open close to one bottle per second using strict guidelines. For example, the wire cages had to be left on the bottles, which is not the usual practice when champagne bottles are sabered for special occasions such as weddings at the Toronto Hunt.
