The Toronto Branch of IW&FS has sadly lost one of its champions with the passing of Bill Whiteacre in his 97th year. Bill was a past director in Toronto with a vision to enhance not only the Toronto Branch, but as an advocate for the advancement of Food and Wine, he established the Canadian Foundation providing scholarship monies to the top students in the Culinary Arts and Sommelier Program of George Brown College. 

Bill was a proud member and Governor Emeritus of the Board of Governors, now IW&FS-A. He encouraged others to embrace the importance of our International  opportunities, not only in traveling with fellow members, but valuing the strength beyond our local branches. Many of his traveling adventures centered around his sharing fine food and wine with his friends, and other like minded gastronomes. 

His love of the finer things in life were limitless. Bill supported the arts including the opera, ballet, and theatre. He was a member of The Arts and Letters Club in Toronto where he met his wife, Lorna Kelly . Together they enthuiastically took on the world, literally and figuratively. Zip lining , skiing well into his 80’s to proudly tackling the  CN Tower Edgewalk .

As a proud Canadian he served his country in the Canadian Forces, which honored him with the Military Medal for Bravery in the Field . Post war Bill achieved the rank of Major with the 48thHighlanders.

Bill continued to serve his country with involvement in government, and running for office. His commitment and love of country remained to the end.

Attending both McGill University and Osgoode Law School, Bill became a Civil litigation lawyer. His love of debate extended beyond the courtroom, but for those who knew him well, could always see a twinkle in his eye which would indicate the end of the debate was near.

Bill Whiteacre will be remembered by those who knew him in IW&FS and beyond.
