On February 4th at Sopra Upstairs Lounge, we were privileged to attend the divine marriage of Massimo Capra’s food and Marinella Camerani’s wines. Marinella, winemaker and owner of Corte Sant’Alda, is Italy’s Winemaker of the Year. Matching her with Massimo, a perennial favourite near and dear to the heart of all Toronto’s foodies, and a fellow native of the Veneto, was a stroke of genius arranged by our Past President, Martha Russel, a personal friend of Marinella’s.
Marinella, at the tail end of a demanding international tour, was suffering from laryngitis, but that did not prevent her from talking about her life journey from an unfulfilling office job to a life of hard work nurturing some of the best vines in Italy. Massimo entertained us with stories of his childhood and life as a young soldier in Verona, always living from the bounty of the land. His menu evoked those memories of hunting, gathering and his family’s meals, all while honouring Marinella’s amazing wines.
We were greeted by cheese croquettes and vegetable marrows and black truffle crostini, accompanied by the crisp 2012 Soave Vigne de Mezzane, with its apricot/peach fruit, mint and mineral accents around a lemon zest. The Ontario rabbit al Ca’Fiui, cipolline and celeriac purée was served with the fruit-driven, spicy 2012 Magri Valpolicella Superiore.
The risotto all’ubriaca with pancetta was a perfect foil for the 2010 Campo Magri Valpolicella Superiore, an elegant ripasso, while the main course of rich stewed short ribs with gorgonzola-laced polenta, a generous portion, had many of us calling for doggy bags! It was served with the superb 2009 Ruvalin Amarone, which clearly has many years of good life ahead of it.
